UDOT: three‑month temporary 'through‑U' on 5600 South starts July 18; overnight I‑15 ramps and bridge girders to close for weekend work

Nancy Cousins, a UDOT project representative, said crews will implement a temporary three‑month traffic pattern commonly called a "through‑U" on 5600 South between Wardley Road and 2050 West while work proceeds on the I‑15 interchange. The configuration restricts left turns at 1900 West and elsewhere, and drivers will use temporary u‑turn signals to change direction and reach destinations that previously required left turns.
Cousins and Elmer Acevedo Garcia explained that, to place new girders and finalize new ramp configurations, UDOT will close I‑15 ramps overnight for a multi‑night window the weekend the work is scheduled. "The ramps are gonna be closed Friday night, Saturday night, and Sunday night from 7PM to 5AM," Cousins said; she also said the 5600 South bridge over the Union Pacific railroad will have a full overnight closure when crews set the remaining girders and traffic will be detoured to 4800/6000 and to Riverdale/Clearfield routes.
UDOT distributed an educational video and QR codes and said it has shared materials with area businesses and the cities of Roy and Riverdale. The agency recommended drivers review utraffic.utah.gov for current restrictions and the project page for the latest schedule. UDOT staff said the temporary pattern is intended to let contractors work in the center of the interchange while keeping traffic moving; the pattern will be in place for about three months and is expected to continue construction through fall 2026.
Council members and attendees asked questions about school buses, large vehicle turning radii for the u‑turns, and how the temporary signals will accommodate emergency responders. UDOT said designers included larger turning radii where possible and that staff would coordinate directly with school and emergency providers. Council members encouraged robust public information and said Roy's staff and police are prepared for an uptick in calls while the new pattern is implemented.
