Operation Coming Home and Mungo Homes present mortgage-free ‘hero home’ for Green Beret; key ceremony set for Nov. 11

Operation Coming Home and local homebuilders briefed the Garner Town Council on a mortgage-free home being built for a severely injured U.S. Army Green Beret and invited council members to a Veterans Day key ceremony.
Paul Kane, corporate secretary for Operation Coming Home and CEO of the Home Builders Association of Raleigh-Wake County, said the nonprofit has built 28 homes for severely injured veterans and Gold Star families since 2008. "The homes are then delivered at what we call the key ceremony, mortgage free for this hero of our country to live their lives and to be a member of this community," Kane said.
Andy Ladner of U.S. Veterans Corps and Operation Coming Home described the beneficiary as a Green Beret who is paralyzed from mid-chest down following a training accident and who "is in a wheelchair" and has "thousands of appointments." Ladner said the family appreciates the home’s proximity to local amenities and that construction teams and trade partners have donated labor and materials.
Mungo Homes described construction and company contributions. A company representative said the house is a three-bedroom, two-bath ranch and that trade partners are participating in a "blessing of the trusses" ceremony in which workers write messages on framing members.
Kane invited council members to the key ceremony on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, at 1 p.m., and council members responded positively. The mayor and council members said they and town staff would coordinate with Operation Coming Home on formal support and logistics; the town manager’s office said staff would follow up and bring any required items back to council.
No formal council appropriation or motion was requested at the meeting; council members expressed support and noted the town’s veteran-oriented identity, the forthcoming VA clinic, and prior support for a 2018 hero-home project in Garner.
The nonprofit said most construction and trade services are donated or heavily discounted and that the homes are delivered mortgage-free to the veteran at a publicized key ceremony.
