Pompano Beach resident says repeated illegal dumping near Markham Elementary; city staff say cleanup starts tomorrow

Lucille, a Pompano Beach resident, told the Community Redevelopment Agency board on July 15 that she regularly finds new piles of dumped material across from her home next to Markham Elementary and fears the debris could be hazardous to children who play nearby.
The complaint matters because the dumping is on or adjacent to residential property near a school and, according to the speaker, has been recurring for years. Lucille said she has photos and the license tag of a truck she believes is responsible and that she has asked the school for video copies.
"I have pictures from what I have from the the trucks that are dumping. I need to know I need to get results. I need to hold somebody accountable for constantly dumping in my neighborhood," Lucille said at the meeting. She described waking to find as many as "15 loads" dumped and said the piles keep her from using her yard.
City staff asked Lucille to meet with code enforcement staff after her remarks. Mr. Tran (city staff) asked Mario, the code enforcement supervisor, to follow up with the resident. Mario told the board that code enforcement and the Broward Sheriff’s Office had identified the hauling company and that the company told staff it would clean up the material.
"The clean up will start tomorrow. Starting tomorrow," Mario told the board during the meeting.
Commissioners and staff indicated BSO and code enforcement are investigating and that staff will follow up with the resident about enforcement outcomes. The board did not take formal action during the meeting; staff said they would report back to the resident and to the board.
The resident and commissioners asked staff for a timeline and for confirmation if any fines or enforcement actions would be pursued if the company does not remove the material. Staff responses in the meeting indicated the company had acknowledged responsibility and committed to clean up; staff said they would pursue further action if the company failed to follow through.
The complaint was raised during the meeting’s public comment period and staff scheduled direct follow-up with the resident and code enforcement.
