Council adopts Traffic Safety and Mobility Commission work plan; special e-bike meeting set for Sept. 16

The City Council unanimously adopted the Traffic Safety and Mobility Commission's work plan for fiscal year 2025-26, which emphasizes data-driven recommendations on multimodal transportation projects and a focused effort on school-area safety and Safe Routes to School.
Transportation planning and mobility manager Nathan Schmidt told council the commission refined its work plan after two meetings with staff and public input; the plan calls for review of capital improvement projects, annual monitoring reports and targeted briefings on speed-setting, traffic calming and roundabout design. The commission chair, Josh Coelho, asked for improved communication and earlier packet distribution for commissioners and recommended periodic inter-commission task forces for complex projects such as Barrio traffic circles and parking.
The work plan also schedules a special commission meeting at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, to seek public input on a proposed local response to state law permitting local decisions on e-bike use by young riders (staff identified Assembly Bill 2234 as authorizing local discussion). Councilmember speakers welcomed the commission's focus on school safety and asked staff to coordinate outreach with school districts.
The resolution to adopt the work plan passed unanimously.
