Cody council authorizes $550,837 FAA grant for Yellowstone Regional Airport runway lighting upgrade

The City of Cody City Council authorized the mayor to sign a Federal Aviation Administration Airport Improvement Program (AIP) grant for $550,837 to rehabilitate runway 422 lighting at Yellowstone Regional Airport.
Aaron Buck, who spoke to the council as the airport spokesperson, said the project will replace roughly 15-year-old high-intensity runway lights with LED fixtures and replace two regulators that are over 20 years old. He said the work is expected to reduce maintenance and electrical consumption for the airfield.
Buck described the funding and schedule: "The cost is, the low bid was $550,837 ... The lights are about 15 years old on the runway, causing some maintenance issues. ... the LED concentration of power and seeing a reduction in cost, for our our power for the runway. So I think that's gonna be a significant, cost reduction for our annual budget that we'll see moving forward." He added that the contractor has ordered many supplies and expects to start in early fall with a goal to complete the work before Christmas, and that the FAA paperwork will be reissued after an administrative issue.
When a council member asked whether the grant imposes a local cost, Buck said the local share is funded from passenger facility charge (PFC) dollars collected at the airport: "Nope. No. The local share comes out of, what's called PFC dollars, so passenger facility charges. So every passenger that flies out of Cody pays an extra $4.50 towards it and, we save that up towards these projects." The motion to authorize the mayor to sign the grant was moved by Council Member MacIsaac, seconded by Council Member Lang and carried on a voice vote with council members voting "Aye."
