UNDP showcases SDG diagnostics and AI tools to compare national development plans and NDCs

Babatunde Abidoye of UNDP described digital tools and AI approaches used to analyze hundreds of national development documents and identify gaps and interlinkages across SDG indicators.
Abidoye said UNDP’s SDG Push diagnostics platform (sgpush.undp.org) and a series of SDG Insights reports—95 country reports produced in 2023–24—allow users to upload policy documents and receive automated summaries of which SDG topics are emphasized or missing. The tool flags alignment gaps between development plans, Voluntary National Reviews and SDG indicator outcomes.
“Each of those indicators, we have inequality policy. We have some part of the policy on not just energy, but you have renewable energies… we started to use AI and science to help us bring all those information together,” Abidoye said, describing work with 95 country teams and ongoing use in about 20 countries for NDC 3 preparation.
UNDP is using similar methods to compare Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and national development plans to identify coherence opportunities for climate action that also advance development objectives. Abidoye said the diagnostics have been used in countries including Cambodia, Tunisia, Liberia, Mauritania and Nigeria.
Audience questions raised inclusion of community‑based youth groups and the digital divide. Abidoye acknowledged access and cost issues and said country‑level dialogue remains critical: the AI diagnostics provide inputs to convened discussions among ministries, finance officials and communities rather than replacing deliberation.
Technical audience members asked how industry and academia can engage; Abidoye said UNDP partners with universities and uses UN Volunteers and invited academic and private sector collaboration.
