The United Nations peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo said suspected members of the CODECO armed group attempted to attack the village of Anjala in Ituri province on July 13.
UN peacekeepers deployed a patrol that led the assailants to disperse and reported no casualties. The mission said it engaged with six Lendu community leaders who reaffirmed commitments to intercommunal dialogue with Hema leaders and to sensitizing CODECO militias on dialogue and on supporting voluntary returns of displaced people.
The briefing noted that the mission is supporting implementation of local peace initiatives, including an “Act of Engagement” committing armed groups to cease hostilities against civilians and to adhere to the national disarmament program.
