Police report: South Lyon orders new radar units, continues e-bike warnings and public education

The South Lyon Police Department reported July 14 that it has ordered two in-car radar units to replace aging equipment and that three cadet recruits are attending the Washington Police Academy and are expected to graduate in September.
Lieutenant Seagullen (also identified in remarks as Seadlin) described department activity since Chief Bakke’s retirement and said staff monitored recent community events. The department reported 28 EMS calls and a continued increase in total incidents year-to-date compared with last year.
Council member Kurzweil raised safety concerns about young people riding e-bikes in the middle of residential streets. Kurzweil said a parent and multiple observers reported incidents of middle-school–aged riders traveling in traffic rather than using shoulders or bike lanes in subdivisions that lack separated facilities.
Lieutenant Seagullen said the department is emphasizing education and has issued about 22 warnings so far, with officers stopping an adult rider earlier in the week. Seagullen said staff are preparing an educational post for the department’s Facebook page. "We're educating the e-bike riders," he said in the meeting transcript.
Council members discussed the limits of infrastructure in subdivisions without shoulders or bike lanes and urged parents to instruct children about safe riding practices. The department said it will continue enforcement and education and monitor the issue.
