Students describe Beta Club’s academic and leadership benefits; chapter heads to compete at national convention

Mecklenburg County Public Schools trustees heard from Beta Club students and their advisor about the organization’s role in building leadership, scholarship and service.
Miss Wright, the chapter advisor, introduced three students who described how Beta Club has affected their academic and leadership development. Slate George, a high-school student, said: "Beta has been one of the greatest things to happen to me in my high school career. Through beta, I've been able to grow leadership skills and build new relationships with people not only in Virginia, but across the country." Skyler Stevens, an upcoming senior, told the board: "Beta has helped me grow into a better leader and a more involved member in my community." Catherine Griffin, also a rising senior, described extracurricular experiences and thanked the board and advisors, saying the club had given her memorable school trips and leadership moments.
Students said chapter members are attending the National Beta Convention in Florida this weekend and will compete in events including musicology, speech, visual arts and academic contests. The presentation noted the chapter placed at state and national competitions in previous years and that the board provided financial support; no new funding motions were taken during the meeting.
Board members praised the students and advisors and wished them success at the upcoming convention.
