The Mecklenburg County School Board received a first reading of the 2025–26 parent and student handbook and code of conduct, which staff said has been reformatted and reorganized for clarity.
Gina Matteo, a staff member who worked on the handbook’s redesign, told the board the document has been reformatted and sectioned to be more user friendly and that coordinators worked to revise the content. Staff said some links in the digital version are not yet active and an appendix with more detailed information will be posted on the district website once final language is complete.
Board members were advised the handbook may undergo minor edits between the first reading and the final vote at the July meeting, and could change later if the state department of education issues new requirements. A board member noted that recent state and federal guidance requires additional notifications in handbooks, citing examples such as suicide‑prevention resources and, potentially, guidance that schools inform parents about firearm storage recommendations; staff said some of that language arises from state guidance.
No final action was taken; the item was presented as a first reading and will return for final consideration at a future meeting. Staff said paper copies will be made available on request for families without internet access.
