The Polk County Board of Supervisors on July 15 adopted a proclamation recognizing August as Emergency Management Month, highlighting the behind-the-scenes work of local emergency managers and first responders.
The sheriff, speaking in support of the resolution, said, “The International Association of Emergency Managers has proposed August to be the month to honor the work that's done in emergency management.” He told the board he supported the resolution and introduced several local emergency-management and response personnel who attended the meeting.
The sheriff named attendees who were present: Dave Campbell of Allied Fire, Nikki Gullickson of Northwest EMS, Ben Strobach (a certified emergency manager from Clear Lake), Lisa McMahon (Polk County emergency manager) and Ray Helling of Turtle Lake Fire. The sheriff said those officials “really are the big picture people,” noting their planning and cross-agency coordination on accidents, fires and other crises.
A motion to adopt the proclamation was made and seconded; the board voted in favor and the motion carried. Board members offered thanks to the emergency managers and department staff for their work and for attending the meeting.
The proclamation recognizes the local network of emergency management professionals and signals the county’s formal appreciation during the month designated by the International Association of Emergency Managers.
