Ellis County awards $36,194 jail painting contract to local bidder

At the July 15 Ellis County Commission meeting, Greg Herb of Buildings and Grounds recommended repainting the county jail, saying the facility ‘‘opened 10 years’’ ago and ‘‘has a fair share of abuse.’’ Herb told the commission the request for proposals specified epoxy paint for durability and ease of cleaning.
The county received one bid, from JDR Behning, for $36,194.78. Commissioners voted 3-0 to award the contract (purchase order BO 7932) to JDR Behning.
Ellis County Sheriff Scott Brown said the work will be coordinated to avoid summer disruptions and that the county may schedule the project for late fall or winter; he warned that a rising jail population may require temporary housing of some inmates during the work. "They're they're in the 60s, so we will be housing a few out when we take that on," Brown said.
The contract award was approved without amendment. Staff said they will coordinate start dates with the sheriff's office and adjust plans if inmate counts or other constraints require temporary relocations.
