Superintendent Dr. Swift introduced two district leaders to the board and community: Dr. Cole Amaya, appointed assistant superintendent for teaching and learning, and Tina Mitchell, named director of equity and student and family engagement.
Dr. Cole Amaya joined the district from Kansas City, Kansas, where he previously served as a district leader, high school principal, assistant principal and instructional coach. The superintendent said Amaya will oversee curriculum, instruction and assessment functions, working with classroom teachers and school leaders to support districtwide teaching and learning.
Tina Mitchell was introduced as the district’s director of equity and student and family engagement after 25 years of service in Lawrence Public Schools. The superintendent said Mitchell served three years as assistant principal at Free State High School and 11 years as a school counselor, and that the role was redesigned this year with input from board officers and the equity advisory committee to focus on culturally responsive systems and authentic family engagement.
Mitchell addressed the board, saying she looked forward to partnering with schools and communities in her new role. The superintendent thanked multiple interview committees — including parents, educators, classified staff, principals and teachers — for their participation in the search process.
