Carpinteria Library reports strong summer programs, ESL growth and seed-lending launch

The Carpinteria Community Library provided its monthly report to the City Council on July 14, outlining program successes and upcoming events.
Highlights: Summer reading remains strong (roughly 144 children participating weekly) and the library plans family programs and a bilingual music concert closing event on August 2. The library launched a seed-lending program with an initial collection of 63 seed varieties and a donated catalog cart from Catalina School to house the seeds. ESL classes and a Spanish conversation group continue to draw participants; the library reported a popular citizenship-test preparation class with six current students and noted a pro bono legal service offer to help with application paperwork and mock interviews.
Community outreach: Staff described close ties with immigrant communities and emphasized bilingual service offerings. The library reported recent donations and new teen summer hires and said recruitment is underway for a Community Engagement Library Specialist. A printed version of a finalized strategic plan is slated for release; the consultant will present to the library advisory commission and library board in late July and September.
Council action: The council voted to receive and file the report. Library staff requested continued support for outreach and programs serving non-English-speaking residents.
