WHEAT RIDGE, Colo. — Mayor Bud Starker and the Wheat Ridge City Council proclaimed July 14, 2025, as Mayor’s Monarch Pledge Day to encourage residents to plant native milkweed and nectar plants that support monarch butterflies and pollinators.
During the meeting Mayor Starker read the proclamation recognizing monarch declines nationwide and urging residents to take local conservation actions. Mary Hester, staff liaison for Sustainable Wheat Ridge, accepted the proclamation and thanked the council for its continued support of the city’s sustainability programming, including the Mayor’s Monarch Pledge and Regenerate Wheat Ridge initiatives. Hester said the city will continue to create and preserve pollinator‑friendly habitat and educate residents on actions they can take.
At the meeting Councilor Olm later said he has observed milkweed appearing in private yards and noted interest in plantings to attract monarchs; Councilor Weaver suggested producing a postcard with the mural image as a potential promotional item to boost awareness of local history and community projects. The council and staff encouraged community participation and education around pollinator habitat.
