Commission approves Huron Police contract with Agtegra for Aug. 2 customer-appreciation concert

The Huron City Commission on July 14 approved a contract between the Huron Police Department and Agtegra for a customer-appreciation concert at the State Fairgrounds on Aug. 2, authorizing Police Chief Derek Lehi to sign the agreement.

Chief Derek Lehi told commissioners the department would provide three officers from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. and four officers from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. for the event at a contract rate of $70 per hour — the same arrangement the city used in the previous two years. “This is for their customer appreciation concert that takes place at the State Fairgrounds. We would be providing the event with 3 officers working from 5PM to 10PM and 4 officers working 10PM to 2AM, at a contract rate of $70 per hour,” Lehi said.

Commissioners asked whether the department routinely fills these paid-detail shifts and whether staffing levels could force the city to decline such contracts. Lehi said the department confirms shift coverage before accepting a contract and relies on a sign-up process; if staffing cannot be guaranteed, the department will decline to provide officers. “So right now, with our staffing levels, before we even entertain this, we make sure that we have the people that cover shifts and have the people who want to do it. Otherwise, we wouldn’t — we’ll just tell them we can’t do it,” Lehi said.

The commission voted to approve the contract by roll call. The meeting record provided shows five affirmative votes on the motion.
