Board establishes two-member handbook work group and adopts 2026 meeting schedule

The California State Board of Optometry on July 11 approved formation of a two-member “board member handbook work group” to revise the board’s 2019 handbook and improve onboarding materials for members. The board appointed Alex Clemens and Uni Linden to the work group and directed staff to serve as liaison; a draft handbook is to be returned for board approval at the first meeting of 2026.
Board staff explained the proposed work group’s tasks: collect and analyze handbooks from sister boards, coordinate with DCA units (legal, public affairs, publications), and draft a revised handbook for board review. Staff noted the board president has authority to create work groups, but that the board preferred formal approval and appointment by motion so the work and membership are recorded on the public record.
The board also approved its 2026 board and committee meeting schedule: board meetings on January 23, April 10, July 10 and October 23, and committee meetings on February 13, May 1, August 7 and November 13. Staff said at least one 2026 meeting is likely to be held outside Sacramento; the October 2025 meeting will be in Southern California and members will receive logistics information.
Ending: The handbook work group will return a draft for board consideration at the board’s first 2026 meeting; staff will proceed with venue and travel logistics for the adopted 2026 calendar.
