Planning Director Mark Helmer told council the project has a dedicated website with an online survey and interactive maps to collect public input. "We've established the branding of it. We've established the advisory committee," Helmer said, adding the advisory committee has met once and will review key plan components in subsequent meetings.
Public outreach: Staff described upcoming community engagement events, including an in‑person meeting referenced for a Wednesday session, pop‑up events at community gatherings (Center Street events or concert series) and a planned online presence via city social channels. Consultants (Kenley Horn was named in packet materials) will also reach out to council members for one‑on‑one scheduling.
Process and schedule: Helmer said the plan will go through advisory committee review, community workshops, planning commission review (with the required 30‑day review period) and then to council for adoption; staff projected a final plan by next summer. Council members emphasized the plan’s importance, noting the document will guide where commercial growth, housing density and industrial buffers should be located.
Next steps: Staff will continue community engagement, post materials to the Elevate Goldsboro website and schedule joint planning commission/council workshops later this year and early next year.
