Collierville OKs first rate increase in landfill disposal contract since 2020

The Collierville Board of Mayor and Aldermen on Monday approved a 12-month contract amendment with Quad County Landfill that raises the town's municipal solid waste disposal rate.
Public Works Director Josh Russell told the board the current contract with Quad County began in July 2020 as a five-year agreement with an option to renew for an additional five years. "Since that contract was initiated in 2020, we have not received one increase," Russell said. He said the existing rate is $19.94 per ton and the amended rate would be $21.14 per ton.
Russell said the annual price estimate is based on an average disposal tonnage of about 16,800 tons; using that volume, the amendment would increase annual cost by approximately $20,268. He also compared local practices, noting Bartlett and Memphis use Republic's North and South Shelby landfills and provided those jurisdictions' rates for context.
The board approved a motion to accept the 12-month amendment by roll call, with six members voting in the affirmative. No council member asked for additional analysis or to explore alternate disposal options at the meeting. The motion listed in staff materials was presented as a routine amendment; no mover or seconder was named publicly during the roll call.
Russell did not list the new contract's effective start date beyond approval nor specify whether the amendment contains escalator clauses for future years. The board did not request a detailed multi-year cost projection during the meeting.
