The Grand Island Traffic Safety Advisory Board voted 3-2 to approve the minutes of its June 10 meeting after a member objected to what he called unnecessary commentary about conduct.
Eric (first name only on the record) moved to approve the minutes as written; Gary seconded the motion. During discussion, Jack Burns said he objected to language in the draft minutes that recounted public criticism and what he described as a chastising tone from another member’s remarks. Burns said the minutes should simply note that Robert’s Rules of Order were distributed rather than include extended narrative of the exchange.
Board members debated whether to edit the minutes to remove the descriptive paragraph. After discussion the motion to approve carried by voice vote with three members in favor and two opposed. Board members asked that, going forward, the minutes reflect procedural facts (for example, that Robert’s Rules were distributed) and avoid editorialized descriptions of members’ remarks.
The exchange prompted a brief reminder from acting secretary Larry Kiefer about the process for circulating minutes and an offer to provide a separate document with the motion text so it can be placed on the next town meeting agenda.
