Reaching Out Now reports renovations, staffing and partnerships at Raymond E. Saint Myers Student Union

Reaching Out Now delivered an update to the Warren County Board of Supervisors on the Raymond E. Saint Myers Student Union, describing renovations completed since the nonprofit regained keys in January 2024 and the group’s program and staffing plans for ongoing operation.

The presenter said the student union reopened to the public Nov. 1, 2024, and that since January the center has “hosted over 300 students through social events, workshops, community events” and has run 27 community events. The presenter told supervisors the organization “secured an excess $250,000 in grants and donations” and hired two core staff members to run daily operations and programming.

The update detailed renovations the group says were completed by local contractors, including wall and surface repairs, interior painting and design updates, stage redesign, updated millwork, security and safety systems, landscaping and a kitchen that remains under renovation. The presenter said the organization installed vape detectors, indoor and outdoor cameras and other safety measures aimed at keeping students secure while on site.

The nonprofit said it has formed an advisory board of local professionals to provide strategic and operational guidance and that the facility is staffed at all times so “students will never be in the student union by themselves.” The group identified two staff members by name: Susie Chamberlain, director of the student union, and Zinnia Gray, program coordinator, and said all staff and volunteers undergo background checks.

Presenters also listed partners and donors who supported the renovation and the initial operating period, including Warren County government (lease and utilities support), Warren County Public Schools, Laurel Ridge Community College, Abundant Life Church, Valley Health, Cisco, and private donors and foundations. The presenter said Justin and volunteers from ACES helped with outdoor projects and that county maintenance staff responded quickly to operational issues.

The presenter described the program lineup (leadership workshops, volunteer opportunities, academic support, creative and social events, and health and wellness initiatives) and said hours will shift to 11 a.m.–7 p.m. during the school year to accommodate public, private and homeschooled students. The nonprofit said it has already partnered with school staff and local organizations for programming and plans to continue expanding services.

The board did not take formal action on the update. The presenter concluded with a brief request that supervisors continue their partnership and said the group will provide written materials with more detail.
