Commissioners approve JFS building architect contract subject to prosecutor review; project reported under budget

Hocking County commissioners on July 10 approved the architect’s contract for a Job and Family Services remodeling project, subject to review by the county prosecutor’s office.
Jody Walker presented the remodeling update and budget details. Commissioners and speakers noted recent cost estimates for planned interior work and remodels returned below initial projections; the architect Jim Thomas was praised for working to keep the project within scope and cost. Commissioners reviewed the capital budget and the architect’s contract and asked that the prosecuting attorney review the contract language before final execution.
The remodel will retain much of the existing building fabric where feasible and create an expanded conference room the county described as able to accommodate roughly 50 people — the largest conference room in county facilities outside the school system. Commissioners said the room will be made available for county departments and community groups and noted it could ease meeting space constraints for gatherings larger than 20 people.
A motion to approve the architect’s contract, subject to review by the prosecutor’s office, passed by voice vote. County staff said they had contacted the architect with two technical questions that would not change the board’s decision to proceed; staff will follow up after the prosecutor’s review.
