The Baltimore County Landmarks Preservation Commission voted to deny the current proposal for a new detached garage at 112 McLaughlin Avenue in Lutherville and instructed the owner to return with alternative designs.
Staff described the site as a 2‑story 1877 house with a non‑contributing former carriage house, and noted the proposed 18x50‑foot garage would sit just six feet from the existing carriage house and be visible from Locklin Avenue. Staff advised against the proposed location and scale and suggested alternatives such as a less‑visible placement, a smaller footprint, or an addition attached to the existing carriage house that would better respect materials and roof pitch. Two nearby neighbors testified, asking for a design that is more residential in scale and does not increase impervious surface; they also raised concerns about drainage and neighborhood character.
Commissioners agreed the proposed building looked out of scale and advised the owner to engage a designer and return with options more compatible with the carriage house and district. The commission voted to not approve the request as presented and to have the applicant return with revised designs.
