The United Nations warned that escalating gang violence outside Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince, has claimed the lives of more than 1,000 people since October and has forced hundreds of thousands to flee, and urged international support and strengthened policing.
Spokesperson Steph said U.N. political and human-rights offices reported gangs extending influence along key routes north and toward the Dominican Republic and that Haitian authorities have deployed specialized police supported by a multinational security support mission, which has slowed gang advances but, U.N. officials said, the security forces lack resources to reassert control over affected areas.
The U.N. statement called on Haitian authorities to ensure police operate fully in line with international human-rights law, asked the international community to maintain the political mission's (BINU) operational capacity to advise the government, and urged strengthening the multinational security support mission and full implementation of the arms embargo as essential steps to restore security and the rule of law.
