Leaders of two armed groups in the Central African Republic took part in a ceremony Wednesday to commit to lay down their weapons and rejoin the 2019 peace agreement, the U.N. peacekeeping mission said, and demobilization is set to begin in days.
Spokesperson Steph relayed comments from Valentin Rugwabiza, head of the U.N. peacekeeping mission, who welcomed the step and said it will reinvigorate the peace process. The mission said the disarmament and demobilization process will begin in Huaca Prefecture where about 500 combatants have gathered to surrender weapons and receive demobilization cards.
The U.N. mission said it will deploy national demobilization mobile teams to verify weapons and ammunition collected and to provide security for teams and the overall operation. The mission noted it has supported demobilization for over 5,000 ex-combatants since 2016.
