U.N. says final consultations held on Russia memorandum on food and fertilizer access; MOU not extended

The United Nations said that final consultations took place in Geneva on the memorandum of understanding with the Russian Federation on unimpeded access of food and fertilizer to world markets, but that the three-year implementation period of the MOU is not being extended.
Spokesperson Steph recounted that the MOU, signed on July 22, 2022, included commitments to facilitate exports of food and fertilizer (including raw materials such as ammonia) and to address impediments in finance, insurance and logistics. The U.N. said the secretary-general established a team led by Rebecca Greenspan of UNCTAD to engage stakeholders, including private-sector actors, to realize exemptions related to the agricultural sector.
“We will continue to work on the issues that are included in the MOU,” the spokesperson said, even though the formal implementation period has ended. The spokesperson said final consultations included a Russian deputy foreign minister, identified as Mr. Vershinin, and Rebecca Greenspan representing the U.N.
