Summary
On the International Day of Reflection on Srebrenica, U.N. officials urged remembrance, vigilance against hate speech and investment in reconciliation, and noted senior U.N. representation at Bosnia ceremonies.
The United Nations observed the International Day of Reflection and Commemoration for the 1995 Srebrenica genocide, saying the anniversary should prompt vigilance against denial, hate speech and divisions and a renewed commitment to justice and reconciliation.
Spokesperson Steph said Secretary-General António Guterres described the Srebrenica killings as “the worst atrocity on European soil since the Second World War” and urged the international community to detect early warning signs and to respect international law, defend human rights and invest in reconciliation.
The U.N. said Rosemary DiCarlo, Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, represented the secretary-general at an official ceremony in Bosnia and Herzegovina and emphasized that the Srebrenica genocide “remains one of the darkest chapters in Europe's recent history” and must prompt an international commitment to never turn away from atrocities.
Miguel Ángel Martínez, the U.N. high representative for the U.N. Alliance of Civilizations, also attended the commemoration, the U.N. said.
