During the July 8 public comment period several residents raised recurring quality-of-life concerns.
Van Born Park and Crestwood fields: Multiple speakers asked whether the newly renovated park areas and Crestwood athletic facilities were safe to use, described exposed wiring, loose covers and poor workmanship on installed features, and urged the city to close or fence areas that pose hazards until repairs are complete.
Public-space cleanliness and Ford Road blight: Several residents said weeds, trash and cracked sidewalks along Ford Road and other commercial strips make the city less attractive to customers and urged stricter enforcement against property owners and businesses.
Evictions and front-yard dumping: Speakers described instances where entire household contents were placed at curbs after evictions, leaving personal items scattered for days; they urged the city to require dumpsters at eviction cleanouts and to adopt ordinances limiting curbside dumping of household contents.
Airbnb/short-term rentals: Residents said enforcement of short-term-rental rules has been delayed and that repeated postponements of planning-commission review have allowed problems with occupancy, parking and nuisance behavior to persist.
Sidewalk and tree maintenance: Several homeowners reported confusing or discontinued sidewalk repair programs and long waits to have city trees trimmed or removed; one resident said she was told not to repair a sidewalk until a diseased tree was removed, but never received follow-up.
Utility billing dispute: A resident described a water-and-sewer bill of more than $3,000, said she had sought meter tests that were canceled without explanation, and asked for staff follow-up; the council asked staff to take the resident’s contact information and pursue resolution.
Council and staff responses: Staff and council members frequently asked residents to complete forms or give contact details so departments could follow up. Several directors and staff (public works, DPW, library and finance) said they would contact residents directly or schedule site visits. Council members urged quicker communication and more transparent timelines for repairs and enforcement.
