Beauregard Parish leaders highlight summer teacher training, new computer science and STEM courses for fall

District officials said teachers completed multiple summer trainings, enabling the district to add new middle- and high-school computer science and STEM courses next school year.
The Beauregard Parish School Board heard a report that several teachers and administrators completed summer professional development that will allow the district to add new computer science and STEM courses at both middle and high schools.
Superintendent Tom Hawley reported that K–5 teachers and administrators attended code.org training aligned to the new Louisiana computer science standards for elementary education, and that two middle school teachers completed the Middle School Computer Science Discoveries professional development so the district can offer the course at two campuses next year. "...2 middle school teachers completed the middle school computer science discoveries professional development, enabling the district to offer this new course at 2 campuses beginning this next year," Hawley said.
Hawley said four high-school teachers received targeted training through the LSU Cain Center—two in robotics and two in STEM career pathways—allowing two new high-school courses for the coming year. He also noted some trainings exceeded 60 hours and that teachers were compensated per district policy. The presentation named several participating educators and schools.
The board did not take formal action on the trainings; the report was presented as part of the superintendent's routine update.
