The Idaho Falls City Council on July 10 authorized an advance purchase (issuing a purchase order) for two sanitation vehicles from Peterbilt Motors Co. for a total of $645,194.
Municipal staff said the purchase order places the city in the manufacturing queue; delivery is expected to take about 15 months. The two vehicles are a roll-off truck and an automated side-loader, purchased through the cooperative purchasing contract with Jackson Peterbilt.
"Purchase order just to clarify, is not a payment; it's a commitment to pay but it's not a payment," staff told council. The council asked about electric alternatives; staff and directors said battery technology for heavy equipment remains limited in cold climates and that electric heavy equipment has operational range issues in Idaho Falls' colder conditions.
Councilor Larson moved to authorize the advance purchase and to authorize the mayor to sign the necessary documents. The motion carried on a roll-call vote; Councilor Freeman voted no. Staff said the vehicles are expected in about 15 months and payment will be made in the appropriate fiscal year when due.
Councilors discussed potential grants and evolving technology but concluded the city would monitor electric options for future purchases.
