Flower Mound commissioners plan booth at Denton ‘Dig It’ archaeology fair; event set for Nov. 1

Gary Hayden, a Denton resident and member of the Denton County historical commission, told the Flower Mound Historical Commission that the Denton Dig It archaeology fair will take place Nov. 1 at the Denton County Historical Park on Carroll Boulevard and invited local participation.

Hayden said the fair will run 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., that admission is free and that exhibitors receive a complimentary lunch; he said the fair drew about 700 visitors last year. He described hands‑on activities—sandbox digs for children, zoo‑archaeology displays, rock‑art projection and displays of artifacts—and noted that the North Texas Archaeology Society and Denton scouts attend so scouts can meet merit‑badge requirements.

Commissioners and staff discussed the commission’s participation. The chair reminded members that public‑comment remarks are not to be debated during the comment period but said the commission could discuss participation later in a subcommittee report. At the meeting’s subcommittee reports, commissioners confirmed that Flower Mound will have multiple participants and exhibits at the fair and that local volunteers, including Alton (a demonstrator who weaves rope beds) and others, are scheduled to present.

Commissioners also reported related community activities: Kendra Calendine, troop leader for troop 771G, volunteered her troop to perform quarterly maintenance at Dunham Cemetery; organizers confirmed the fair’s rain date is Nov. 8; and several commissioners urged coordination with Parks & Rec for outdoor displays and to arrange table space near the community market at the historical park.

Ending: The commission did not adopt a formal motion to expend funds at the meeting; members asked staff to place discussion of participation logistics on a future agenda so the commission can finalize staffing, table assignments and promotional materials.
