Planning staff begins zoning ordinance reorganization, readies materials for comprehensive-plan update

Planning Department staff updated the commission on July 2 about two ongoing initiatives: a functional reorganization of the county zoning ordinance and preparatory materials for the comprehensive-plan update.
Staff said phase 1 of the zoning-ordinance update consists of a functional reorganization that will be followed by a policy-oriented phase 2 after the comprehensive-plan update is further along. Staff estimated the reorganization could take about seven months of work before returning ordinance amendments to committees and the Planning Commission.
Staff also reported finalizing a community profile document to advise the comprehensive-plan process, launching a comprehensive-plan website, and circulating a public participation plan that outlines outreach and engagement strategies. Staff invited commissioners to comment on the public participation plan.
Commissioners asked about timing and involvement of advisory committees; staff said the project would follow the normal ordinance-amendment process and would include committee and commission review prior to Board action. The status update did not include specific amendment language or deadlines beyond the general timeline for phase 1.
