The State Building Commission approved the University of Memphis’ request to proceed with designer selection using a construction manager/general contractor alternative delivery method for the research modernization project.
Renee Bustamante, executive vice president and COO (CFO) presenting for the university, said the project is included in the 2025–26 capital outlay budget and carries an approximate total cost of $75,000,000, including a campus match of $4,500,000. The project would modernize roughly 115,000 square feet across 15 locations on the main campus, upgrade infrastructure and modernize wet and computational labs; about 30,000 square feet will be converted into research-specific accommodations, the presentation said.
Commission discussion included praise for the renovation approach rather than new construction; a commissioner said renovating existing space produces value and thanked university leadership for the approach. The commission moved, seconded and adopted the approval by voice vote. The university will proceed with designer selection and later steps in procurement and construction processes.
