The Hot Springs City Council authorized the mayor to sign a notice of award and the Federal Aviation Administration grant application to install an AWOS 3 automated weather observation system at the Hot Springs Municipal Airport.
Council members and staff said the AWOS 3 installation will provide more detailed weather reporting at the airport and support instrument flight operations that currently limit some operators. Airport staff indicated construction could begin as early as September, subject to contractor schedule and weather. Council voted to approve the authorization; the motion passed on voice vote.
Why it matters: An AWOS 3 provides pilots and operators with continuous, certified weather information at the airport, which can enable more instrument flight plans and reduce diversions to larger airports. Council members noted neighboring airports already have similar systems.
Details: The authorization covered the notice of award and the FAA Airport Improvement Program project AIP-3-466-0020-019-2025 for construction of an AWOS 3 unit. Staff said the project has been in development for several years, that grant funding is now available, and that previous contract approvals and paperwork were completed so construction may proceed once the grant documents are signed.
