Allie and planning staff said projects now include climate and embodied-carbon considerations, citing Primoz Park as a pilot for materials selection and construction methods intended to reduce embodied carbon. Staff noted that parks provide community benefits and irrigated turf is sometimes protected in the city’s drought plan because trees and active recreation rely on irrigation; staff said future design standards may increase native plantings and reduce irrigated turf where appropriate.
On flood mitigation, staff said North Boulder Park work includes drainage and grading improvements in partnership with the utilities department; Allie said the site does not absorb water well and that planned interventions will improve detention and drainage. On wildfire, staff advised that Boulder Fire Rescue and climate teams are working on the finalized wildfire mitigation plan and that the wildland‑urban interface (WUI) remains a focus for planning.
Bernie and other board members raised questions about balancing competing priorities — for example, maintaining golf course trees and stormwater benefits versus turf water use — and staff responded that projects are weighed with multiple lenses including equity, stewardship, and resiliency.
