Cathedral City’s council voted July 9 to accept a donation of the sculpture Ozone by artist Craig French, valued at $19,500, and to authorize the use of up to $5,000 from the Art in Public Places Fund for a base and installation. The Public Arts Commission recommended acceptance and staff identified the library rotunda as a preferred location.
PAC members said the stainless steel sculpture is low maintenance but has a sharp point requiring a raised pedestal (PAC discussed a roughly 40‑inch pedestal height to improve visual impact and safety). PAC representatives said the artist is willing to bring and install the piece for minimal labor cost and that the donor was motivated by generosity.
Staff said the $5,000 figure is an upper limit for pedestal fabrication and installation; if actual costs exceed the amount council authorized, staff will return for additional authorization. The motion to accept the donation and authorize installation funds carried unanimously.
