The Canton Township Board of Trustees approved appointments July 8 to the township’s Tax Board of Review. Clerk Kirk Siegrist moved to appoint Raj Grewal and Vaisam Hamoud for terms retroactive to Jan. 1, 2025 and ending Dec. 31, 2026; the motion was supported by Trustee Foster and approved by the board.
Township staff said the appointments follow Michigan law requiring a tax board of review to examine the assessment roll and hear appeals related to principal residence exemptions, qualified agricultural exemptions, taxable value uncapping, disabled veteran exemptions and poverty exemptions. The tax board is composed of six members split into two three-person panels to give residents more scheduling options for appeals; the board meets in March, July and December.
Trustees Borninski and Foster said they interviewed candidates and recommended appointing both individuals now because one immediate vacancy exists and another vacancy will arise in January; the timing aligns with required training and ensures coverage for upcoming appeal windows.
The board approved the appointments and the clerk will notify the appointees and arrange required training and schedules for the March, July and December meetings of the tax board of review.
