Canton Township’s Board of Trustees approved a contract and purchase order to Friends of the Rouge to design, install and manage a pollinator garden at the Township Administration Building, authorizing an amount not to exceed $20,000. Clerk Kirk Siegrist moved the item and Trustee Ganguly supported the motion; the board approved the project.
Staff presented plans to transform deteriorating shrubs and lawn areas near the administration building’s eastern and southern facades into native pollinator plantings. Director Hoenberger told trustees the work will be coordinated with upcoming parking lot construction to avoid damage to new plantings, and the project will include educational signage and a care-and-maintenance guide. Installation was anticipated to begin in early August with completion by September.
Supporters said the garden would reduce lawn mowing and irrigation needs, increase native biodiversity, provide habitat for pollinators and help with stormwater management. Trustee Borninski and Clerk Siegrist both expressed enthusiasm; Siegrist said the native perennials “don’t require as much water” and noted the project could serve as an educational feature for residents visiting the building.
Friends of the Rouge will manage volunteers for installation and secure materials. Canton Nature Society was mentioned as a potential volunteer partner. Trustees approved the contract and budget amendment to proceed with design and installation.
