Human Resources and parks staff briefed the Lakeville Select Board on the National Fitness Campaign (NFC) grant opportunity at the July 8 meeting. NFC offers grants in the $30,000–$50,000 range for outdoor fitness installations; the program requires a substantial town match (staff estimated roughly $120,000–$210,000 depending on equipment selection and site prep needs).
Staff noted that NFC evaluates sites for foot traffic, accessibility and ADA compliance; Ted Williams Camp was identified as the site with the strongest heat-map metrics for usage in town. The board discussed using Community Preservation Act (CPA) funds or pursuing a park grant to cover the town match or obtain a reimbursement. Board members signaled support for pursuing a NFC application if matched by a viable CPA or park-grant plan and asked staff to meet with the parks committee, finalize a preferred site and develop a CPA grant application for consideration at the fall town meeting.
The NFC package includes a possible “studio” option (higher-cost installation with mural/amenities) and lower-cost equipment-only options. Staff said several nearby towns have installed NFC equipment with minimal maintenance and recommended the town investigate long-term maintenance responsibilities and funding sources. The Select Board asked the Town Administrator to continue discussions with NFC and to bring a formal recommendation and funding plan back to the board.
