Select Board directs interim planning support, posts part-time planner position
Summary
After a failed finalist and ongoing planning workload, the Lakeville Select Board directed the town administrator to contract part-time, project-based planning support and to post a part-time planner position.
Faced with an ongoing vacancy and rising planning workload, the Select Board on July 8 directed the Town Administrator to arrange interim planning support and to post a part-time planner position.
Staff briefed the board on four options: keep the current full-time posting active; contract a part-time, project-based consultant; issue a request for proposals for consulting services; or reclassify and tier the planner job to create a junior (Planner I) and senior (Planner II) path. After discussion, the board voted to pursue option 2 immediately: engage a part-time, project-based planner on a temporary contract (the town discussed a candidate offering up to 10 hours per week at roughly $60/hour), while concurrently creating and advertising a part-time planner job posting.
Board members said the planning board has been operating without staff support for months and that the town needs immediate capacity to support rule- and regulation updates, permit processing, stormwater bylaw work and other near-term items. The board asked the Town Administrator to return with a proposed contract and a timeline for the part-time posting.
The board emphasized that the temporary consultant should focus on immediate backlog items and provide hands-on support for the planning board while the town seeks a longer-term classification and hire to match Lakeville’s needs.
