Zoom caller tells Klamath County commissioners sheriff refused to execute warrants in alleged weapons case

During the July 8 Klamath County Board of Commissioners meeting, a Zoom caller identified as Christy used the public-comment period to accuse the county sheriff of failing to execute warrants and of retaliatory conduct toward victims.

Christy said the alleged inaction concerned an individual she referred to as "Miss Pereira," saying the person "has 26 weapons, 12 of which are related to the act of warrant." Christy also named an individual as Sheriff Darren Mitchell and said, "like his predecessor, is using his badge and position to retaliate...and in doing so, he is directly ignoring a court order." She said she had "shared my concerns with district attorney Scott" and that the district attorney "responded in part."

Why it matters

Christy framed the remarks as a public-safety and justice concern and noted the board does not function as a law-enforcement agency. She added, "She stated that, quote, 'I work great in HR. It's kind of cool.' She's not just mocking me. She's mocking you. She's mocking the DA. She's mocking the judge..." and concluded, "When the sheriff doesn't let the victim, you don't have to worry about handcuffs. This is unacceptable, commissioners. It's not acceptable to me, and it should be unacceptable to you."
