Tacoma held what the city described as its largest Juneteenth celebration at Stewart Heights Park, featuring music, dance, food, vendors and family activities. Mayor Victoria Woodards presided over the event and said raising the Juneteenth flag over the Tacoma Dome was a historic first for the city.
“I am standing in our Tacoma Dome parking lot where we just raised the Juneteenth flag over the Tacoma Dome for the very first time,” Mayor Victoria Woodards said on the program. “We want to honor 06/19/1865, a day of liberation, by celebrating how far we've come, but remembering how much work we still have to do.”
Separately, the City of Destiny Awards — a city recognition program established in 1987 — announced its 2025 recipients. City materials presented on the program said the awards recognize individuals and groups across categories including adult and youth leadership, lifetime service, environmental sustainability, disability advocacy, economic development, equity and empowerment. The program said more than 320 individuals and groups have received City of Destiny recognition since 1987.
One award recipient shown speaking on the program thanked the community upon receiving the Inspire Tacoma Award, saying “Gratefulness is the overwhelming feeling that has consumed me since I've received the call that I was this year's recipient of the Inspire Tacoma Award.”
Why it matters: Juneteenth ceremonies and public recognitions such as the City of Destiny Awards are civic events that commemorate history, highlight community contributions and signal municipal priorities.
