EDC members say windstorm damage doubled cost of city event; board discusses budget carryover

Members of the Chickasha Economic Development Council (EDC) discussed a year-to-date budget overrun July 8 after strong winds damaged tents, golf carts and other equipment at a recent city event.
A board member raised the issue during the meeting’s consent discussion, asking whether the council should review line-item budgets before spending or address shortfalls afterward: “So the question is, do we look at budget before we spend, or do we spend and then try to figure out how to make up for the overage?” the board member said.
The question followed staff comments that storm damage to tent rentals and other equipment produced significant unexpected costs. “That specifically was gone over because we had to pay damages on the tent rental on all of the rentals for the press conference event,” said staff member Kimmy. Participants discussed several dollar amounts cited during the meeting: one speaker said more than $29,000 in damage was attributable to the tent and related losses; another said that, combined, the damage totaled “over $60,000” when all claims were added together. Meeting speakers also noted insurance covered part of the losses.
Why this matters: council members said the overage could force cuts to other scheduled events if not tracked in advance. It goes over to the next year.” Another speaker said hotel-tax receipts were down by about $47,000 this year and that available carryover figures were unaudited; the board discussed a current carryover balance in the ballpark of $260,000 but described it as preliminary.
The council approved the meeting’s consent items by roll call before moving on to a separate item about the contract of services with the Chickasha Industrial Authority. Members said they will provide a clearer account of event costs at the next meeting. One staff member offered to compile a full accounting and present it next week.
Board members described the windstorm as a near miss for public safety because several hundred people had been in the area during cleanup. One participant noted relief that no serious injuries were reported and urged that storm contingency practices be emphasized in future event plans.
