Wellsville council formalizes fireworks boundary; resolution to make restrictions permanent

The Wellsville City Council on July 2 voted to adopt fireworks restrictions that cover areas south of 900 South and west of 200 West and directed a council member to draft a resolution to make those limits permanent for the summer/fire season.

Councilors discussed past fires and dry conditions as rationale for restricting fireworks in areas closer to irrigation canals and dry foothills. One councilor said the city has used the same boundaries for several years and that making the restriction a resolution would put it on the public record as a standing seasonal restriction.

A councilor proposed a seasonal window (for example, mid‑May through mid‑November) so New Year’s celebrations would remain separate from summer fire risk. Staff said signage is already posted at the boundary roads and that the sheriff’s office has been informed. The council also discussed notifying residents by social media and text message.

A motion to adopt the restrictions as listed (200 West and 900 South) was made and seconded; the council voted "all in favor." The motion passed without a roll-call tally recorded in the meeting minutes. A council member said they will place a resolution on a future agenda so the boundary and seasonal prohibition can remain in effect unless the council acts to change it.
