Track rejuvenation delayed after product concerns; gyms, parking and auditorium projects continue at Fairfield Union

Superintendent Doug Bellville told the board the district’s ongoing summer maintenance work is progressing but that the track rejuvenation has been delayed after the contractor flagged quality concerns with a sprayed product.
Vasco began repairs to low spots on the track, long jump, high jump and pole vault areas and applied the first surface layer. When crews opened additional barrels of the liquid material used for subsequent layers, Vasco reported the product’s consistency did not meet expectations and paused work while the manufacturer and vendor inspected and replaced the material. Bellville said the contractor expected delivery of replacement material but that delays pushed finishing into the next several days.
Bellville said the district chose to delay final surfacing rather than accept a substandard finish. He said final work and finishing sealcoats in front of the district office will be scheduled for a weekend to reduce disruption to students and staff.
Other summer work reported included near-complete sealcoating of parking lots (weather delayed portions of the work), annual refinishing of the high school and middle school gym floors and a lighting project in the auditorium. Bellville said demolition for the auditorium lighting was mostly complete and new fixtures are expected to arrive imminently; the administration plans to clean sound baffles, drapes and seats after construction is finished and aimed to have the auditorium fully functional by the first weekend of August.
Bellville also noted logistics adjustments to allow athletes to practice while work continues and said the district is coordinating to limit access to areas under construction.
