Wayne County commissioners approved a payment of $36,341.19 to a contractor that replaced hurricane-damaged roll-up doors at the county EMS facility so the vendor could be paid while insurance and claims processes continue.
A commissioner explained the county had initially pursued FEMA funding; when FEMA declined, the claim was referred to the county's insurer through ACCG. County staff said the work was urgent to protect ambulances and EMS staff and that the contractor needed to be paid for materials and labor. "So I'll make the motion that we go ahead and pay the 36,000," a commissioner said during the meeting.
The county expects its insurance to reimburse the expense; staff characterized the reimbursement as likely but said ACCG had not yet approved payment at the time of the vote. The commission voted in favor of issuing payment to prevent the contractor from bearing the materials and labor costs while insurance processing continues.
No vendor name or payment schedule was presented at the meeting; staff said they would pursue reimbursement through ACCG after issuing the payment.
