Commissioners ask council to consider permanent memorial for fallen officer

Diaz said the banner and community remembrance sites remain focal points for people visiting Z ócalo and asked if a permanent recognition could be established. ‘‘I was just wondering, will there be some kind of, like, a permanent memorial or a plaque or something to honor the officer’s bravery or courage?’’ she asked.
Maria Vavalos said the city council has been "looking into it" and that the decision likely would be led by either the council or the police department. Chair Cecilia Bernal and other commissioners praised community solidarity during the procession and candlelight vigil.
No formal motion or directive was recorded during the commission meeting; Vavalos said the matter is under discussion at the city council level.
