Sayville board debates ways to reduce middle-school sports cuts; asks administration for cost analysis

Board members proposed possible responses: add a second team, start intra-district or inter-scholastic JV-style teams, create intramural options, or use the fifth session to rotate previously cut players in agreement with opposing coaches. Trustees recognized each option carries cost and staffing implications, including additional coaches, umpires, uniform and field costs.
Dr. Ferris and other administrators said they would direct staff (including Dr. Cox, referenced as reviewing options) to conduct a cost analysis and return recommendations on feasible models for increasing playing time while balancing fiscal constraints. No vote or policy change was taken.
Board members asked that the analysis include fiscal impacts, staffing needs (coaches and assistants), equipment and facilities costs, and potential scheduling challenges. The board said it would consider proposals that could be implemented in the near term and items better suited for next year’s budget planning.
