County approves suicide-prevention agreement and youth mental-health funding

Churchill County authorized a contract with trainer Emma White to continue local suicide-prevention work after state funding cuts and approved two grants totaling $39,700 to local youth mental-health programs.
The Board of Churchill County Commissioners approved multiple items aimed at sustaining local suicide-prevention and youth mental-health services.
Shannon Ernst of Churchill County Social Services told the board that the county completed a suicide-prevention and behavioral-health plan and had relied on state contractors for training. “As of July 1, their funding was cut,” Ernst said, and she recommended contracting with Emma White — a trainer previously used by the state — to continue implementing the plan and providing training.
Ernst said the city of Fallon agreed to split the contract cost 50–50 with the county; the county’s social-services budget includes funds for mental-health activities in FY2025–26 and the Churchill County School District agreed to contribute $5,000 from its reduced allocation. The board voted to approve the agreement with Emma White and authorize the county to proceed.
Separately, commissioners approved funding allocations from county accounts to support school and community programs: $20,200 to the Churchill County School District and $19,500 to the Churchill Community Coalition to support positive mental-health and substance-abuse education, Ernst said. Ernst identified the R092 marijuana-tax revenue fund and opioid-settlement funds as the revenue sources for these grants and said the goal is to maintain counseling access in schools and community prevention programming.
All motions to approve the agreements and funding carried.
