Elected county officials urge commissioners to address pay freezes since 2016

District Attorney Mallory addressed the Board of Churchill County Commissioners during the public comment period to urge the board to consider salary adjustments for elected officials.
“Since 2016, none of the elected officials have received any type of increase, not a general increase, not a step increase, not anything,” District Attorney Mallory said. “They have all received that. … We would simply ask, that you look at the law in general and interpret it in the light best suited to compensate for this shortfall that the elected officials have received.”
Mallory said elected department heads have seen subordinates’ pay rise while elected salaries remained “frozen in time,” and asked commissioners to weigh the human effects of pay decisions when interpreting the law. Mallory also reminded the board that decisions about salaries are the board’s responsibility: “Any decision about salaries and interpreting this bill, has to be the decision of the board. You cannot designate that to a committee.”
No formal action followed public comment. Commissioners moved on to the posted agenda items after the remarks.
